First, we at Otero believe that every garment should fit perfectly, every time. We believe that you have better things to do than try on every shirt that should be in your size to see whether it actually fits. In fact, we believe this so passionately that we completely reinvented the concept of clothing sizes.

Most men’s apparel brands are designed for an imaginary “average" body type—one that is roughly 5’10" or 5’11", of middling weight, with a chest measurement that determines the width of the entire garment. All other sizes (XS-XXL) are created off of this template by making the shirt proportionally bigger or smaller. Some brands adjust the length and width of the garment while leaving all the detailing—placket, collar length, etc.—exactly the same size making the overall look particularly awkward.

In contrast, Otero utilizes a 3D Proportional Sizing methodology taking into account your height, size, and body type to provide you with a shirt that will fit comfortably at the shoulders and at the waist every single time. In addition, all the key design elements (from the collar to the cuff) are redesigned proportionally for each garment, so that every off-the-rack garment will feel perfectly tailored.

Second, we believe that style begins with wardrobe and ends with the perfect accessories. According to Otero founder Steve Villanueva: “I came up with this idea out of sheer frustration. Even when I found a shirt that mostly fit, it was still never quite right, and I never felt fully confident wearing it. So when I decided to found a clothing line for men in my height range, I knew that I would have to radically rethink the whole idea of sizing." The founding partners at Otero began by researching data taken from tens of thousands of body scans, and they soon discovered that most “average" sizes fit poorly because male body types actually fall into two types that are defined by the ratio between the chest and waist, which either resembles a rectangle or an upside-down triangle. We knew that for any garment to fit well, it had to account for the underlying architecture of bone and muscle, your body type, as well as your exact height and relative size.

Since the bone and muscle structure is quite differentiated, it is not difficult to assess. Men with a Rectangle body type tend to have a chest measurement only slightly larger than the waist measurement, usually 1"-5". In contrast, a Triangle body type tends to have a chest measurement substantially larger than the waist measurement, approximately 6"-11".

These differences in body type actually serve an important purpose because they represent specialization in the muscle function. Men with a Rectangle body type have longer, leaner muscles that are perfect for endurance sports (distance running, biking, tennis, rowing, swimming, water polo, rock climbing, etc.); in contrast, men with Triangle builds tend to orient themselves towards impact sports requiring great speed, bursts of strength, and sheer stopping power (body building, sprinting, wrestling, martial arts, football, rugby).

You can also determine your body type by how “average" clothing sizes fit on you. If you can never find a shirt that fits comfortably at the shoulders without being horrifically baggy at the waist, you’re definitely a Triangle. And if you can find shirts that fit at the waist, but seem to have arm holes that come halfway down your torso and collars that never lie properly, you’re definitely a Rectangle.

For some men, their waist is larger than their chest and that is due to how men gain fat under the muscle layer (just the opposite of women). In such cases, it is important to compare your belt size or jean waist measurement to your chest measurement. Usually the belt line falls below the belly.

This proprietary 3D sizing system is based on three measurements:

Height: An Otero shirt is first constructed to 3 height categories:

• 5’4" to 5’5"
• 5’6" to 5’7"
• 5’8" to 5’9"

Body Type: Within each height category there are two Body Types: Rectangle and Triangle

Size: Within each height and body type category, we have designed sizes: S-XL for the Rectangle body types, and S-L for the Triangle body types.

Otero Hang Tag: Your whole Otero measurement will be something like:

Proportional Fit: All key design elements, from the collars to the cuffs, and down to the width of the placket and the pocket, are designed proportionally to the height of the garment to ensure the proper look. “In the past, even when I ordered garments from a custom shirt site, the collars were still too large—cutting off my neck, which visibly makes me look shorter and compressed” Stephen Villanueva, Otero Founder. At Otero, every detail is intentional and always proportional so that every shirt looks like it was made just for you.

Our data is drawn from scans of thousands of actual bodies, and, more importantly, the guys who founded this business all wear Otero clothes. We wanted clothes that fit us perfectly and felt amazing, so we designed clothes with our own needs in mind—and we won’t ever sell a garment we wouldn’t be proud to wear.

We have a wonderful designer at Otero who is creative, imaginative, and we love to dream and imagine together. From the beginning, our goal has been to find designs with classic lines that will wear well for years to come, and to also consider design elements that tend to visually lean and lengthen the wearer’s body. For example, we designed side panels into our higher end Polos and T-shirts that utilize a different fabric; these panels invite the eye to focus on the middle portion of the shirt, creating longer, narrower lines.

We are always strategizing new ways to help men feel confident, attractive, and fashionable because we believe that a great wardrobe helps you to showcase your best inner self.

We want to look good, but we also want to feel good about what we wear. For that reason, we deliberately chose natural cotton for its feel, its consistency and its overall performance as a high-end, quality material. We also chose it because cotton is sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable. Many companies in the apparel and outdoor industry use alternative petroleum-based fibers to save costs, but many of these alternative materials are non-renewable and few provide the same longevity, overall performance, and classic feel as natural cotton. And so they’ll be sitting in landfills for decades to come.

We also appreciate the versatility of cotton, which can be milled in a variety of ways.

We use 100% cotton jersey on our most affordable shirts, because it is durable and breathable, moves flexibly with the body, washes well, and retains color perfectly.

For our mid-tier line, we use 100% liquid cotton, which has a smoother finish and incredibly soft feel, while retaining the durability and flexibility of the cotton jersey.

100% mercerized cotton is reserved for our highest-end shirts because it is a meticulous process that increasing the surface area of each cotton cell, which gives the whole fiber greater softness, luster, durability, and finish. The final product has a silky feel which drapes beautifully on the body.

I noticed that you use different kinds of cotton for different shirts. What is the difference between the various types of cotton?

There are a HUGE variety of cottons in the marketplace.  They differ by many characteristics, from thread size to thread count to the way they are woven or knit into fabrics.  The best resource for detailed information on cotton fabric is the Cotton Incorporated web site at Types of Cotton .

Do Otero products ever go on sale?

Otero offers fashion forward products that are timeless and well-crafted. We don’t have clearance sale prices on our clothing, but we do offer new bundles at Clothing Bundles every month so that strategic shoppers can save on a more complete look.

What payment methods do you accept?

Otero Menswear is happy to accept all major credit cards.  We’re planning to add other forms of payment (including PayPal, Amazon Pay, and Apple Pay) in the near future.

If I purchased the order as a gift, can you ship it with a gift receipt instead of an itemized expense receipt?

When will my order arrive?

Every parcel mailed from the Otero warehouse is assigned a tracking number. You’ll find your tracking number on your ship-confirmation email, after your order is shipped.  Customers in the continental US should receive their order in 3-4 business days.  Shipping time for customers outside the US may vary widely, depending on the total distance and speed of your local mail service.

Where are the orders shipped from?

Orders ship from our warehouse in Dallas, Texas, USA.

I made a mistake on the color/size/shipping address. Can I change it after I have placed an order?

Due to credit card security issues, we can’t change the shipping address once the order is placed, but if you contact our Customer Support agents immediately at Contact Us we’ll do our best to cancel the order before it is shipped. We have this policy in place to protect you from fraudulent re-routing of your order; to change the shipping address, you would need to cancel the original order and place a new order with the correct shipping address. Other changes to your order (sizes, colors, etc.) can be handled by Otero customer service, if you contact us before the order is shipped. Once an order has been shipped, we are unable to change it.

Can I have part of the order delivered to one address and part of the order delivered to a separate address?

Not at this time.  Please place separate orders for each ship-to location.

Why is my shirt too big?

We want your clothes to last for years to come.  Since all cotton fibers shrink a bit when they are washed, we deliberately design the shirts a little bit large so that by the time you’ve washed them once or twice, they will fit perfectly.

What is your returns policy?

We gladly accept returns within 30 days after the purchase date, and we will do our best to make the return shipping easy.  

What items can be returned?

We are happy to accept the return at Returns of any unused, never-washed item in its original condition and packaging. No explanation is necessary.

What is the virtual fitting room powered by Perfitly?

Perfitly is an AR/VR enabled visualization solution that re-creates the fitting room experience for you. Perfitly allows you to see exactly how clothing will look and fit on your body.

How does it work?

Perfitly brings together two key technologies: smart algorithm using just 5 key body measurements to create an avatar that accurately represents your body, and a proprietary CAD-based system that accurately drapes each garment based on its manufacturing specifications (design, patterns, fabric, etc). So it solves for the issue of “does it fit” and also the issue of “how will it will look on me”. It’s the closest thing there is to trying it on yourself in the fitting room.

How is Perfitly different?

We know the online “fit” space has a seen a lot of activity. The existing solutions solely focused on the objective part of fit. No one has really focused on the subjective side. The part that requires visualization. No one can tell you how that shirt or those pants will look on you. Perfitly can and that's why Otero has chosen to partner with them. You’ll see the garment on your unique avatar -how the shirt fits across your shoulders and where the shirt ends at your hips. All the “little things” that often make the difference between a beloved item that’s worn often, or an item that sits in the closet collecting dust.

How do I create the avatar?

First, get a tape measure to measure yourself if you don’t know your measurements. It might be easier to have a friend to help. Next, input the measurements for: height, chest, waist, hips, and inseam on the app. In moments your avatar will be created and you can go shopping!

How long does it take for the avatar to be created?

Moments. You will see your avatar in the shirt you selected within seconds in the virtual fitting room.

How accurate is it?

If I already created my avatar, do I need to do it again next time I shop?

No! Once you created your avatar once, simply click on the “Try in On” button.

Where is my avatar stored?

Your avatar is encrypted and stored on Perfitly's secured servers, and only seen by you. To further enhance privacy, we do not store your face.

Who can access my information?

No one but you. Even Perfitly will not be able to identify you as a unique avatar.

Can I re-measure myself?

You can update the avatar as often as needed. Just select the “measure again” button on the profile page.

Is this free to use for shoppers?

Yes! No fine print or exceptions.

Will Perfitly work for everyone?

Yes, except for the top and bottom 1% in height or weight. Perfitly will accurately measure men ranging from 5’ 2” to 6’ 4", weighing 120 to 300+ lbs.

How do I delete my account?

Just send us an email through the contact form and we will delete your profile. We would appreciate it if you can give us a reason so we can continue to improve our services.
